Japan Again! - Tokyo - Oct 09

Tokyo Day 3

This morning I gave bf the option of what he wanted to do, and he chose Tsukiji. Now, usually all tourists go to Tsukiji, it seems to be the number one thing to do in Tokyo but had never appealed to me. One - vehicles rushing around scare me. Two - the smell of fish usually makes me want to vomit (I can't even go into the fish section in the supermarket). Three - not really that fond of pools of blood. Four - I didn't really have any shoes on hand that I wouldn't mind being covered in blood and scales. Five - I'm pretty sure the guys who work at Tsukiji aren't that happy tourists lark around in their dangerous work areas. The list goes on. But, since bf wanted to go, I had to grit my teeth and go along.

As soon as we got off at the Tsukiji station, I could smell the fish. I never envied the people wearing those masks as much as I did at that moment. Bf was delighted though, and we headed on to the market. We hadn't headed off to the market too early and it was probably close to 10 when we went so there wasn't too much action, and unfortunately, once we were in the inner market I couldn't hold my composure anymore and told my bf in no uncertain terms that I needed to 'get the hell out!'. Sorry guys, but as fascinating as Tsukiji may be, I can't really get past the blood, the smell, the dead animals.

Once we left the market though, I cheered up. We headed to the sushi restaurants surrounding and I saw one with a decent sized line. Thinking it must be good since there was a line, we decided to eat there. While waiting a man started to talk to us, he was Japanese but had grown up in Hawaii and proceeded to tell bf that I would make a good subservient wife (I am eurasian..) he couldn't be more wrong hahaha. We ordered one of the sets, and didn't even know what half of the things were that were placed in front of us. The sushi was incredibly fresh, and in some instances still-moving. As someone who cannot eat more unusual things I bravely ate everything put in front of me, and it was all superb.

After getting back to Japan, I was reading through some food reviews and saw a write up on some of the most famous sushi places in Japan. The photos looked really familiar and when I went through the pictures I took I realised the place we had randomly walked into was in fact Daiwa Sushi - what luck!

After Tsukiji we wandered around Shinjuku shopping and eating from our favourite food courts as usual, check out these cakes *drool!*

That night I had booked a restaurant in Shinjuku, Mon cher ton ton that I had found through researching on Tripadvisor. It was only a few metres from Keio Plaza and although it was a lot cheaper to go for lunch we splurged and decided we would go for dinner and enjoy the views.

We ordered the special sernya set dinner for 11,550Y and believe me it was worth it! I have only been to teppanyaki in Australia and here it seems like quite a different affair - there is one chef per table and while they cook the food in front of you, they joke and play games and throw bits of food at you. Fun, but also not really about the food - you end up still hungry.

However at Mon cher ton ton it is ALL about the food. Our chef started us off with some appetizers while he started cooking up garlic and prepared some seafood; live prawns, scallops and vegies. The prawns were amazing, and we ate everything from the flesh to the tail to the legs. Then the chef pulled out the steak. Oh my lord. It was spectacular, we even had our photo taken with it haha. The beef was cooked morsel by morsel, and served with a selection of sauces - my favourite was the onion sauce. I can still remember that first bite - the beef just MELTED in my mouth and there was an explosion of flavour. Just the most amazing thing I have ever eaten. After the beef we were served garlic rice and then dessert, but who cares about all that I just want to go back to eat that beef.

The chef made sure 'each' garlic bit was cooked perfectly, those prawns were alive!

The best thing I have eaten..ever.
