Japan June 2011 - Day 13 - Hiroshima

Our first morning in Hiroshima we decided to head straight to Miyajima as we had no idea how long it would take and if it would take all day or possibly give us an afternoon to spare exploring breweries. If my bf had been in control we would have been able to make the breweries, however with me in control no such luck! It took us over 4 hours to see the main sights and although we could have rushed to go to some breweries it would have been a stretch!

Miyajimi is an island of the coast of Hiroshima, and it only takes about 10 minutes to go across on the ferry (¥170 one way). It is nicknamed 'Shrine Island' for the obvious reason that it is a holy place with many buddhist and shinto temples & shrines. Similarly to other holy areas in Japan, deer run the place and the occasional monkey.

Unfortunately we didn't see any of these abusive thieving monkeys.

Itsukushima Shrine at low tide, completely different!

After spending a while exploring Miyajima, attempting to reach the Mt Misen summit before succumbing to the heat and incline, we headed back into Hiroshima and spent another night eating Okonomiyaki. This time we went to the Okonomiyaki-mura which is oddly described as an Okonomiyaki food theme park... It is basically a building in Hiroshima with a number of levels, each of them with a number of small restaurants all of which only serve okonomiyaki each cooked in a different style. We chose one of the restaurants right at the elevator as it was actually quite intimidating to walk around in such a cramped close-quarters space and reject all the other operators, especially as the restaurants would only fit around 8 or so people in at a time! I think we ended up eating at the 'Carp' restaurant as i remember there being loads of baseball paraphenalia.

Just as a side-note, we never managed to make the time to do this, but I am sure it would be a great experience! A Sake brewery district in Hiroshima:
